Government officials inspect rides and investigate accidents

Rides/devices regulated under this authority:

  • Rides at large theme parks
  • Rides at smaller parks
  • Rides at fairs and traveling carnivals
  • Inflatables at carnivals and parks
  • Inflatables - private rentals
  • Go-Karts
  • Bungees
  • Waterslides

Special Conditions:

In May 2006, new legislation extended state amusement ride regulation to include go karts, bungees, more water rides, inflatable devices operated at parks and carnivals, and mechanical rides that carry fewer than the old threshold of 5 passengers. The new regulations should be in place before the start of the 2007 season.
Regulations Pertaining to Accidents

General categories of accident reporting required for regulated devices:

  • Severe injuries
  • Injuries treated by a physician
  • Injuries requiring on-site first aid
  • Major equipment damage

Reporting Criteria:

Accidents resulting in serious physical injury as defined in CT penal code must be reported within 4 hours. "Serious physical injury" means physical injury which creates a substantial risk of death, or which causes serious disfigurement, serious impairment of health or serious loss or impairment of the function of any bodily organ.

Procedure/Authority for Investigating Accidents:
