Regulatory agencies that provided public records to Saferparks

The following table gives a rough overview of state accident reporting laws that apply to owner/operators of U.S. amusement rides, and the accident reports provided to Saferparks in response to public records requests. Records requests were sent to all state agencies in 2002, 2004, 2006, 2007, and 2008, asking for accident records in years 1999-2008. Response varied from excellent to poor. Some agencies lacked capacity to provide electronic or photocopied records; one state had a retention policy of zero days; a few agencies failed to respond to the letters at all. Approximately 15,000 accident records were provided, and Saferparks is grateful to the agencies that provided them.

Notes:

  • The four categories of reporting requirements listed in this table are frequently used in state laws governing this industry, but they are approximate measures. Click on the jurisdiction to see more detail on the specific accident reporting criteria that applies to rides operated there.
  • Click on the report count to view accident reports provided to Saferparks by that agency.
  • A few reports in the database were obtained from other U.S. agencies (federal, county or city). Those are listed at the bottom of the page.
