Regulation Type:

Government officials inspect rides and investigate accidents

Rides/devices regulated under this authority:

  • Rides at large theme parks
  • Rides at smaller parks
  • Rides at fairs and traveling carnivals
  • Inflatables at carnivals and parks
  • Inflatables - private rentals
  • Go-Karts
  • Bungees
  • Waterslides

Special Conditions:

Water slides with less than 10 feet vertical drop or less than 50 feet length are not included in regulatory jurisdiction.
Regulations Pertaining to Accidents

General categories of accident reporting required for regulated devices:

  • Severe injuries
  • Injuries treated by a physician
  • Injuries requiring on-site first aid
  • Major equipment damage

Reporting Criteria:

Accidents resulting in injury to any person or major breakdown of the ride must be reported as follows: immediately, if fatality, or serious traumatic injury requiring medical care resulting from structural or mechanical failure of ride; 24-hours for all other accidents.

Procedure/Authority for Investigating Accidents:

State inspectors are authorized to investigate serious accidents.
